How To Eat Healthy on a Tight Budget

We have this notion that eating healthy food is expensive. That is true for some, but there are ways that you can maximize your budget and yet, get the best quality food. You just have to stick to these rules:
  • Make a meal plan
  • Stick to your budget
  • Do substitutes
  • Cook your own food (cook in bulk quantity)
  • Pack your meals to the office or school
  • Know what is junk foods
  • Go to the flea or local market to buy produce

Fresh produce from the market which costs way cheaper than buying from the grocery. All these for $11 (Php510), I was able to buy fruits and vegetables I can use for juicing and cooking.

All the above mentioned are all self-explanatory, food preparation is the KEY to HEALTHY EATING. This will save you money to buy other necessities at home. And, you are sure that you and your family are getting the best- nutritious food in the market.

Below are some of my go-to nutritious drinks (smoothie and juice) that I am experimenting on for months now, and to this day I can say that I am happy with it. There are a few more recipes over at my Instagram account if you'd like to see. :)

This is one of my favorite juice because of the citrusy and sweet taste of the pineapple combined with cucumber. :)

Chia + roasted flax seeds + kale + carrots + avocado + strawberry yogurt + yakult + milk = #breakfastsmoothie

Beets + cucumber + spinach + carrots + flax seed + strawberry yogurt + milk + yakult. #power #powerbreakfast #smoothie #Wednesday#bitsenpieces #9thyrannivwtay

Chia seeds + roasted flax seeds + kale + blueberry yogurt + yakult + skimmed milk= #breakfastsmoothie

I really love munching on peanuts, I decided to buy organic raw nuts and roast it at home. I combined almonds, pumpkin, sunflower, peanuts, and raisins to make my own version of trail mix, less the chocolates of course!
Roasting nuts can consume your time but it is all worth-it knowing how clean and you can maximize the roasting time according to your preference.

Eating healthy breakfast like cereal flakes, riched in fiber, using non-fat milk and raisins as a natural sweetener.

Chicken + cauliflower + spinach + cream + curry powder + butter + peanut oil chili flakes = hapunan #norice
TOTAL COST: Php100/ $2

Homemade organic peanut butter with roasted milled flaxseed with olive oil.

I replaced the commercialized peanut butter we used to buy at the grocery to this homemade peanut butter. It took some time to get used to the taste but eventually we are loving it. On bread spread and even for all peanut butter sauces needed for cooking.

Are you into eating healthy lately, any juice or smoothie recipe that you love?

I make it a point to cook from scratch. I live about 300 meters from a local market, so it is convenient for me to get fresh meat and produce anytime. Cooking your own food is better because it is tastier and less expensive than pre-packaged, pre-cooked frozen meals you get at the grocery store.

  25. Thank you for sharing these tips. I totally agree that creating a meal plan is very important nowadays. It helps us save money as well as time when we already know what we need to prepare. We have been preparing weekly meal plans and it was indeed a life-saver.

  26. Awesome tips! Unfortunately for me we live in a really rural area, I was amazed to see how much produce you managed for that price! For me produce is expensive, even our farmers market ~ that has a very limited supply. All places with produce are a 40 mile drive one way, what I find is given our rural location produce that I purchase needs to be used same day, otherwise its already started to spoil (I assume this is because of our location, and that it takes longer for produce to get shipped here). So I often dehydrate what I buy that I can afford. Still blown away at the amount of produce you snagged for the price (I need to move to where produce is cheaper!)

  34. Great advice. I love nuts but they are so expensive in supermarkets. So I was overjoyed to discover a little stall in the flea market with all kinds of nuts that are way cheaper than at the supermarket.
